When asked ‘Where are you from?’ Ashley’s answer used to be a simple ‘Derbyshire.’ However, he now proudly declares that he resides in the picturesque Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site (DVMWHS).
In 1977 he was offered a job at BBC Radio Derby, and worked there until 2000 when his post as Arts & Entertainments Producer was axed, 18 months after winning Silver in the Sony Awards, the radio equivalent of a BAFTA nomination.
In 2003 he commissioned himself to take photos in Tuscany, and these images were instrumental in securing a greetings card deal. Ashley was also taken on by Derbyshire Life magazine as a chief writer/photographer.
By 2008, he had taken on weddings, events, portraits and portfolios, published his first Belper and Duffield calendars, and his images have appeared on the covers of novels by Joanna Trollope and Jodi Picault.
As well as a love of radio and cinema, Ashley is passionate about contemporary music (well, largely music that was contemporary in the years 1965 to 1975, the greatest decade for popular music).
Since 2018, he has been running an annual May workshop in Tuscany.
There will be contractors in the church hall for two weeks from Monday 5th August as they need to take the bar area down and replace several floorboards. Damage has been caused by wet and dry rot, which when removed can release spores which are toxic. The damage was caused a few years ago when the beer pipes we installed in the bar, and they were not lagged. These pipes have been dripping slowly over the years, causing the wet and dry rot.
We thought we could use a reduced space in the room, but this is not possible due to the toxic nature of the rot. The whole room has to be sealed off, and the contractors have to wear protective clothing and face masks.
This damage to the floor and the repair work involved is beyond our control, but it does mean we are unable to hold a formal meeting in the hall for two weeks.
As a result our charity auction will now take place on Thursday 24th October, and the Print competition no 3 will be held on Thursday 26th September. The deadline for titles to be entered remains as Sunday 4th August
As an alternative to a formal meeting we will be meeting in the club car park at 7.30pm, and will walk into Leverhulme Park with our cameras and take photos of flora and fauna and whatever else is to be found.
We have a mobile phone image competition on Thursday 28th November, so you could take some photos ready for that competition.
Help and advice on matters photographic can be freely given on the evening.
We are sorry for any inconvenience, but hope you understand.

Robert Harvey
we welcome Robert Harvey with his illustrated lecture "By the Sea"
Professional photographer Robert Harvey created Natural World Photography to share his passion for landscapes, nature and the night sky.
An Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and a Chartered Natural Scientist, Robert worked in environmental management for 20 years
Robert has nearly 400 images accepted in international exhibitions and holds the Excellence award of the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (EPIAP). He is inspired by remote locations such as coasts, mountains and deserts, where untamed land is sculpted by natural elements.
Our coast is the spectacular wild edge of Britain. Fulfilling the tremendous photographic potential of beaches, cliffs, sea stacks, natural arches, lighthouses and castles requires effective use of seasonal light and tides.
Photographic techniques discussed include different shutter speeds, high dynamic range, stitching panoramas and capturing storms.

Kevin Pigney
We welcome Kevin Pigney with his lecture " My Wildlife Journey"
Kevin has been interested in photography for several years now and his main focus has been on photographing UK wildlife.
For him, the key to getting good quality images is good fieldcraft and a lot of patience.
Where possible he likes to have good eye contact with my subject, as he thinks the eyes bare the very soul of the creatures he photographs.
Kevin likes to achieve clean, out of focus backgrounds which show an essence of the environment without distracting from my subject.
Subject-wise his first love in nature is the brown hare, and he has spent countless hours in the company of these magical creatures.
He finds the most effective technique is to lay in wait as trying to stalk them is, in his experience, rarely productive.
People have often said to him, “you are lucky” to get these photographs, which of course he is, but he does find the more time he spends out in the field, the “luckier” he becomes!

Craig’s love of wildlife started from a young age, learning to respect and care for wildlife in nearby woods as a small child. He was taught always to respect wildlife and listen to nature and it willgive up her secrets.
Craig is a self-taught wildlife photographer. He uses the medium of photography as a method to capture the beautiful, and the not so beautiful, things he witnesses in nature. Placing a frame around something he has seen, letting the image convey the true beauty or story of that moment in time is something that words could never describe.
Craig’s images represent an event that occurred in the wild, something that he witnessed and recorded with his camera.
His skill lies in interpreting and presenting this in a way that invokes beauty, mood and emotion with each moment captured.

Most photographers think you can only get good sport pictures if you have a fast telephoto lens and a press pass. This talk covers numerous sports where you can get great images without the need for expensive equipment or the need for a press pass.
It also explains how to apply for sports that you do need some form of accreditation in order to take photographs.

The judge will be Diana Magor.
Diana comes from a photographic family – her grandfather took pictures and so did both her parents.

She has belonged to a Photographic Society most of that time - first In Canterbury, then Cambridge University, and finally Hoylake Photographic Society in the Wirral. For the past 12 years Diana has been an international judge in many categories for both Print and PDI. Diana enjoys judging, whether it's locally or abroad as it gives her the opportunity to see many different styles of pictures.

We welcome Adrian McGarry and his presentation on Smartphone Photohgrapy
https://adrianmcgarry.com/iphone-photography
Adrian was born in Manchester and is now enjoying life in North Wales
Photography has been a steadfast and enduring pursuit throughout his entire life. Adrian has been actively involved in creating digital art, a journey that has led to a fulfilling and creative career that has now spanned over five decades.
Over ten years ago, he embarked on a significant shift in his photography approach, transitioning from a Canon DSLR and multiple lenses to an iPhone. Smartphone photography quickly became his passion, and the iPhone became his preferred camera.
Embracing smartphone photography did not mean that Adrian discarded everything he had learned about photography. On the contrary, he firmly believes that his iPhone photography has made him a better photographer, offering greater opportunities, convenience, and creativity in his work.
Through the practice of intentional camera movement and multiple exposures he expresses a personal interpretation of light and form. His re-imagined coastal scenes created in an abstract style with impressionistic, free-flowing camera movements are the result of emotion and spontaneity.
