Monthly Competition Results

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

The fifth and final round of this year’s print competitions took place on Thursday 18 October 2017 with guest judge Anthony Pioli FRPS FBPE making a very welcome return to our Club.

Tony said at the start that he would give more comments and helpful advice to the prints from members of the Club Level as he generally finds that the inexperienced and newer members need more encouragement than members in the more experienced groups.

The Club Level prints were first to be shown and after a run through of the 18 prints Tony did indeed give very helpful and constructive comments on all of these prints. He held back five he considered to be the best from this group, awarding top marks to three of them. These were “Emily” by David Miller, “Evening Sun on Coniston Jetty” by Derek Ainsworth, and “Victoria Hall, Bolton” by Dave Liggett.

The 27 Intermediate Prints were next, and after more helpful advice and comments, Tony held back seven, saying these were all very good images. He awarded the full 20 points to both “Bamburgh Castle” by John Durkin, and “Male Red Grouse” by Mick Stone.

The 17 Advanced Prints were last to be seen, and Tony was extremely impressed with the very high standard of these prints. This was reflected in his scoring, was very close and Tony admitted he had to be very picky and look for small details to separate them. He held seven of them for further consideration, giving top points to four of them. These were “Great Crested Grebe Feeding Young” by Richard Towell, “On the Way Home” by David Hawkins, “Scaleber Force” by Peter Thomasson and “The Black Cuillins from Elgol, Skye” by Mike Williamson.
