Inter Club Competitions

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

Monday 17 July 2017 saw Swinton host the annual inter club competition between our clubs, with each club entering 10 prints and 10 PDI.

The judge was Chris Boyes from Sale PS, who said that all the prints were of a very high standard, and went on to say he has been judging for just over a year, having been through Christine Widdell’s mentoring scheme. He outlined his style is to see if an image has impact, and he tries to give positive points for each image before any negative points.

The prints were displayed first, and as Chris had seen them at the start of the evening, he gave his comments and scores, holding 6 back. Chris awarded 20 points to “After the Rain, Loch Duich” by Mike Williamson which he said was a very sharp and detailed print, and to “Dried Anthurium and Fatsia Leaf” by Peter Maddock. The remaining held prints were awarded 19 points.

Chris said that in his opinion the best print on the night was “After the Rain, Loch Duich” (by Mike Williamson), and “Here Comes Breakfast” (by Pat Berry) was the best Natural History print tonight.

The scores at the end of the Print section was Swinton 175 and Bolton 178 points, so it was very close.

After a refreshment break the PDI were shown and after a run through Chris gave his comments and scores. He held four PDI back and awarded 20 points to “Eurasian Cranes” by a member of Swinton PS. The other held PDI received 19 points.

At the end of the PDI section the scores were 178 to Swinton and 170 to Bolton.

The final tally of points was 353 points to Swinton and 348 points to Bolton, making Swinton the winners by just 5 points.

Everyone present enjoyed seeing many superb images on the night. Our thanks to the members of Swinton PS for their friendship and hospitality, and we look forward to hosting this competition next year.
