Informal club competitions

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

On Thursday 26th July 2012 our members were set the challenge of taking photographs in Bolton on their way to the club meeting. Starting at the Town Hall at 7pm, members could take as many photos as they liked, returning to the club for 8.30pm. They were not allowed to manipulate the image in camera or on a computer as it had to be “as seen” – adjustments to aperture shutter speed and ISO only were allowed. On their return to the club they could hand in only one image to the organisers.

A total of 30 members took part and all the images were projected for all to see and score by a show of hands. At the end of the first showing the images with the lowest scores were eliminated, and the remaining half were shown again. These images were further reduced to 6 images, and then the top three shown again.

The highest scoring image was “Three Lights” by Don Isherwood, taken in the Market Hall. In joint second place were “Loving Couple” by Sarah Christian and “Conversation Couple” by Paul Longden.

All members present agreed the evening had been both fun and challenging, and no two images were similar, despite the members wandering together around the town centre in small groups.
