External Competition Results

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

There were 16 clubs from within the L&CPU each showing their best digital images for Bob Dennis APAGB CPAGB from Bebington on the Wirral to pass comment on and score.

This is a knockout competition of three rounds and a final round, and in the first round all 16 clubs each show 4 images, a total of 64 PDI. The four lowest scoring clubs are knocked out, leaving 12 clubs in Round Two, showing a further 4 images each. The top eight clubs go through to Round Three, after which the top two clubs each show one image in the final to determine the competition winner. Whichever club eventually won, the audience was set to enjoy an evening of 146 images,

Our strategy was to just keep clear of the knockout zone on each round and keep our best image till the final – easier said than done! The gamble is that if we keep our best image till last but are knockout out before the final, we have not used our best image, and perhaps should have used it sooner!

Each club nominated their four images for Round One beforehand, and judge Bob had seen these prior to the competition, enabling him to score them on the run through. Four clubs were duly knockout out, namely Whitworth, Davyhulme, North Manchester and Leigh – we had overplayed our strategy and came third with 65 points!

In Round Two the standard of images improved considerably, and Todmorden. Oldham And Rochdale CC were knocked out, and that left Rochdale PS and ourselves both on 62 points, and one club had to be eliminated! Luckily we had one image (“Puffin with Sand Eels by Richard Towell) scoring 18 points, higher than theirs, so we stayed in at the expense of Rochdale PS. Our strategy only just worked that time, thanks to what turned out to be our highest scoring image on the night!

We had – just - made it into Round Three, an achievement we did not manage to do last year. The task now was to make it to the top two of this last round – as task we did not quite manage due to the superior quality of the images form other clubs.

Swinton and Chorley battled it our in the final, with Chorley winning the trophy. Our congratulations to Chorley and to John Smith and the members of the Rochdale and District Camera club for putting on yet another superb competition. We are already looking forward to taking part again next year.
