The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

On Tuesday 20th May 2014 we again took part in the annual Ted Colman Memorial Competition in Rochdale. This year there were 21 clubs taking part in this knockout competition, and the lowest six scoring clubs after round one would be eliminated. The remaining 15 go forward into round two at which point the lowest seven scoring clubs will be eliminated, leaving 8 clubs to contest round three. The two highest clubs in round three submit one image each and a winner is announced.

Each club has submitted 13 images and the four images for round one were chosen in advance of the night. The difficult choices came for those club in round two and three –do we enter four images to progress through, or our best images and if we progress what then, and which image is kept back in case we make it all the way to the final. Definitely a case of “wise with hindsight” at the end of the evening, but we felt we made the best selection we could per round.

To keep it all together the organisers from Rochdale Camera Club used the judging skills of Toni Pioli FRPS FBPE from Buxton

Our first round comprised of “Kite Surfer” by Richard Towell, “Siberian Stonechat” by Adrian Drummond-Hill CPAGB, “Miserable Day” by David Hawkins and “Ferrybridge Power Station” by Phil Durkin. We scored well in this round, with “Kite Surfer” on 16 points, “Siberian Stonechat” with the maximum of 20 points, “Miserable Day” with 18 points and  “Ferrybridge Power Station” scoring 17 points – a total of 71 points, putting us in a very credible second place to Chorley at the end of the first round.

Six clubs were knockout out, and the remaining 15 clubs hastily chose a further four images for round two. For round two we entered “Like a Duck, Out of Water” by Peter Thomasson, “European Reed Warbler” by Adrian Drummond-Hill CPAGB, “Waiting at the Door” by David Hawkins and “Slioch over Loch Maree” by Peter Maddock. Having listened to judge Toni in round one we thought these images would score well, but the standard of images form the other clubs also increased significantly in round two, and we did not score as well as in round one. Toni gave us the following scores “Like a Duck, Out of Water” 15 points, “European Reed Warbler” 17 points, “Waiting at the Door” 15 points, and “Slioch over Loch Maree” 17 points, a rather disappointing total of 64 points. This sadly put us in the bottom seven clubs, so we duly were knocked out. Round three contained stunning images from those clubs left in the competition, and the final was between SLIC with “Studying” and Oldham PS with “Cement factory at Dawn”. After much deliberation judge Toni pronounced SLIC the overall winner.

We thank John Smith and the organisers at Rochdale Camera Club for their hospitality and for putting on another superb competition, and our congratulations to the winners from SLIC. We look forward to another evening of fun and excellent images next year
