The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

Our first competition of the year was the North Cheshire Photographic Society Competition at Poynton in March. There were 13 clubs who entered this event, Bolton usually enter this event and in the past we tended to come between 8th and 10th, there is always very stiff competition here. In 2018 we eventually came equal second in the event, only beaten by The Evolve Group. We even managed to beat Chorley P.S.

Our next competition was the traditional away leg of the Bury Battle, This is 10 prints and 10 PDI’s from 20 different authors, and is a very challenging competition to select images for. However the selection panel did a fantastic job. The prints were shown first, followed by the PDI’s. Nick Hilton scored as follows:-   Prints: Bury 157 points, Bolton 167 Points. PDI’s: Bury 161, Bolton 159.

Overall Bury scored 318, Bolton scored 326. A very good result for Bolton at a very pleasant event, and well supported by our members.

In May we attended the Ted Coleman Memorial Knockout Competition. We had to select 13 PDIs for this event with 4 being shown in the first round with the bottom 5 scoring clubs being, as the name suggests, knocked out. And yes, as the name also suggests, we were knocked out. The aim of this event is use your weakest images but score enough to get through to the next round. We were knocked out by a count-back rule whereby 6 scored equal points and we didn’t get any 20’s in the round, so we took an early bath. A very difficult competition to get right, in the past we have scored to high and used stronger images early, which left us lacking a little towards the latter stages.

Moving on, July we had our annual battle with Swinton PS. In the past Swinton have been a bit of a stumbling point for us. In the digital images Swinton scored 172 points with 2 held images, Bolton scored 173 Points also with 2 held back.

In the Print section, Swinton scored 165, Bolton scored 181 points. An overall win by 17 points.

Next up was the 3 way battle with Wigan CC, Bolton DPS and ourselves, held away at Bolton digital. The scores are as follows: Digital images: Bolton Digital 163 Wigan 165 Bolton CC 174. Print scores: Bolton Digital 166 Wigan CC 165 Bolton CC 176. Overall win by 20 Points. An excellent win against two very good clubs.

Last but most certainly not least was round 2 of our Bury Battle. After a great win away to Bury we had the opportunity to kick them whilst they were down (In a very friendly way of course). However, the plan didn’t quite work out that way. In a nutshell we got stuffed and they got their revenge! The overall scores were Bolton 330, Bury 344.

A bit of a disappointing end to the Battles year, but still all good fun!

To round up, we have had another great year!!!!
