Club Trophies

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

Our annual Trophy Presentation night took place on Thursday 9th February 2012, with guest speaker Philip Hodson EFIAP from Poulton-le-Fylde.

The Russell Trophy is awarded to the author of the best print in the Annual Exhibition held at Waterstones. In 2011 it was judged by Roy Bolton who is the picture editor of the Bolton News. In terms of quality the Annual exhibition was our best yet, and Roy did say it was a very difficult task having to choose just one print. He did make his choice, and the winner is the print “Blue Cheeked Bee Eater” by Adrian Drummond-Hill

The Coronation Cup historically was awarded to “the best slide or projected image in the Annual Exhibition”, but to keep up with technology we have changed this award to be for “the best projected image selected from the top three images from every projected image competition held in the year.” The winner as judged by Roy Bolton, Picture Editor of the Bolton News, is “Mesmerised” by David Hawkins. (David was not present on this evening so was presented with his Trophy by Club President Ray Jefferson at a subsequent meeting).

The Roy Williamson Trophy is a  new award is making only its second showing, and is awarded to the member achieving the highest score in the Themed Competitions. This competition has no advanced or beginner status, and includes both 5 rounds of prints and 5 rounds of projected images, so to win an author needs to be consistent.

In equal third place were 4 members: Andrew McArthur, Nina Thomasson Jeff Griffiths and Ian Watson all with 4 points. In second place with 5 points is David Hawkins. The winner on 11 points and having an image in the top three places in 5 rounds is Ray Jefferson.

The David Farrell Trophy is awarded to the best Image taken on a “Days Out” organised by club members. The prints and projected images submitted came from a diverse range of days out, and covered a wide range of subjects. The competition, held on 5th January, was judged by David Bibby AFIAP BPE3* from the HASSRA Fylde Photographic Society. The Best Projected Image was Philip Durkin’s “I’ve Seen the Light” taken in Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. David was torn between this image and the best print, but he eventually made his mind up. The David Farrell Trophy is awarded to the print “The Champion” by Eric Grindle.

After the presentations we enjoyed some of Philips stunning projected images of wildlife taken at several locations in Lancashire, and were very impressed with the quality of the images and with his patience needed to capture the images in their natural habitats.

We give our sincere thanks to Philip Hodson for presenting the trophies, and our congratulations to the worthy winners. We hope all our members continue to enter and enjoy our various competitions in 2012.
