Club Trophies

The Bolton Camera Club meets weekly throughout most of the year and gives a very warm welcome to visitors and new members. We have been sharing a passion for photography since 1884 and are more than happy to share with you, whether your interest is in film or digital, audio visual or more technical aspects of photography.

The David Farrell Trophy - A Personal View of the Man by Past President, Jeff Fernley

I have been asked to write about my friend and fellow member of BCC, David Farrell and how we came to have the David Farrell Trophy.

To start with, I have to go back to March 1979, when I first joined the club. I was privileged to meet some of the best monochrome workers in the area at the time; Harold Elton, Roy Fishwick, Stan Davies, Geoff Davies. Ian Lunn was one of the first members I made friends with and I recall one evening a very tall man came into the room and started chatting with Ian. That man was David Farrell. Very soon, they involved me in the discussion and that was the start of our friendship. I quickly learned of David's passion for collecting old cameras and the fact that he was a member of the Collector's Club of Great Britain. Anyone at the club who came across an old camera would ask David about it. What David did not know about them was not worth knowing.

David was a very patient man, always ready to help the club in any way he could. One particular night I remember was when he did the annual club auction. Boy did he dress up for the part!! Resplendent in brown bowler hat and yellow check waistcoat, he could be quite comical when the occasion called for it.

We went on to spend 15 years working together for Bolton Lads and Girls Club, doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme - showing youngsters how to develop films and make 10x8 prints. The greatest pleasure was when one of the youngsters received the Gold Award and went to St. James' Palace to be presented with his award by HRH himself. The youngster went on to use their other passion working for the Bolton Mountain Rescue team, telling their story using words and pictures.

David was one of the truest friends I ever had. Sadly, he died too young. He had so much more to give. The cup was part of David's family legacy. His wife, Sheila (who is still a member of the club) had the trophy refurbished and presented it to the club in 2003 when we were looking for a trophy for our Days Out Competition. I was lucky, honored and overjoyed to be the first to win it that very year. What a moment!
